Let's Dance

Namaste and Hello to every single person who is reading my blog. Today I will introduce you to the different types of dances which are performed in India.
I found a really interesting quote about dance and I wanted to share it with you.

"Dance is the poetic baring of the soul through motion." - Scott Nilsson

I totally agree with him and I really liked this quote when I read it for the first time.

I believe that  dance is the best way to get relief and some break from your daily life. And I personally like to dance a lot. Dance is also a kind of physical activity and helps you to maintain your shape in an entertaining and joyful way.

There are many different types of dances in India. Every part of India has its own type of dance, including north, west, south, east as well as middle India.  There are hundreds of dances in India and so in this blog I am just going to share the ones I know. Dance is not only seen as a way to celebrate but also as a way of worshiping and thanking gods and deities.

This is an image of all the states in India. This will help you as I will be introducing you with some of the states and their dance.

So lets start with north India-
Delhi: I have lived in North India for 3-4 years and basically my family is from the northern part of India. I lived in New Delhi, which is the capital of India. So the most famous north Indian dance that I know is Bhangra (men) and Gidda (women). It is a fusion of music and dance which originates from Punjab (where actually my family belongs from).
I think it is one of the most energetic, attractive and at the same time interesting and pleasant dances of India. And the best part is I actually can perform this type of dance and I did perform in my school's art night function. It was a great experience and I really enjoy this type of dance. Below is a picture of some people dancing Bhangra.

Other north Indian dances include -

Jammu and Kashmir
Dumhal, Rauf and Hikat
Himachal Pradesh
Jhora, Jhali, Dangi, Mahathu, Jadda, Jhainti and Chharba
Uttar Pradesh
Hurka Baul, Nautanki, Jhora, Chappeli, Raslila, Chholiya and Kajjri
Punjab
Giddha (women), Bhangra (man) Ghamaan and Kikli
Haryana
Ghodinaach, Saomg, Phag dance, Daph, Loor, Gugga and Dhamyal

Let us go to western part of India-
Maharashtra: I have lived most of the  time of my life in the western part (that is Mumbai). I have lived in Mumbai for 9-10 years. It is very beautiful but also a very busy city. So the dance that I am aware of in Mumbai is Lavani. I tried to perform it once but I am not really good at it.It is noted for its powerful rhythm and kind of erotic sentiment. It is performed by the female performers wearing a nine-yard long saris (the most famous Indian dress). The song and dance are performed in a quiz tempo.  This type of dance originates from Maharashtra and the word lavani derived from the word lavanya.

Rajasthan: It is know for its bright colors. I love Rajasthan although I don't belong from there but I feel very good whenever I go there. The most popular folk dance of Rajasthan is Dandiya. People wear colorful dresses and perform skillfully with big sticks in their hand.

Garba: It is a folk dance of Gujarat. I have never been to Gujarat but my father was born there and nothing else. It is a circular form of dance performed by ladies on the Navaratri days (which is a festival in India which lasts for nine days). The basics of the dance are singing and clapping rhythmically while going round the goddess.
